As Lionel Messi made his return to the field during the 2026 World Cup match against Algeria, his story continues to resonate far beyond football.
As a child, Lionel Messi could not afford the treatment he needed for a growth disorder. Today, through his foundation and his work with UNICEF, he supports health and education projects that help thousands of children around the world.
From a sick child to a symbol of hope
Before becoming one of the greatest football players in history, Lionel Messi was a young boy from Rosario who risked seeing his dream shattered far too soon. At just 10 years old, he was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency, a condition requiring expensive treatment that his family struggled to afford.
The opportunity that changed his life came in 2000, when FC Barcelona decided to invest in his talent and cover the costs of his necessary treatment. Without this help, the future world champion’s career might never have taken off.
This may also be why Messi has never forgotten how essential it is to ensure that children have access to medical care and opportunities for development. Over the years, alongside his athletic successes, he has built a legacy of social commitment that today benefits thousands of children in different parts of the world.
The Leo Messi Foundation and its commitment to children
In 2007, the Argentine champion established the Leo Messi Foundation with the goal of supporting projects related to health, education, and the social inclusion of children. Through the foundation, health programs, educational initiatives, and efforts to support vulnerable children have been funded.
Since 2010, Messi has also served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, a role that has led him to support international campaigns dedicated to children’s rights, access to education, and the protection of minors affected by war, poverty, and natural disasters.
Among the projects supported by his foundation is the funding of prefabricated classrooms in Syria, which have enabled more than 1,600 children to return to school after years of conflict.
The major pediatric oncology center in Barcelona
But one of Messi’s most significant initiatives focuses specifically on children’s health.
In 2020, the Argentine soccer star received the Values Award as an international athlete at the Sports Values Gala organized by the newspapers Sport and Prensa Ibérica. He was honored for his decisive contribution to the creation of the new pediatric oncology center at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona.
According to information provided by the award organizers and FC Barcelona, the jury selected Messi for making it possible—through donations from the Leo Messi Foundation—to build one of Europe’s leading centers dedicated to the treatment of childhood cancer.
As early as 2019, the foundation had participated in the fundraising effort that raised more than the 30 million euros needed for the project. The new center was designed to significantly increase the treatment and research capacity of the Catalan pediatric hospital, which is an international leader in pediatric oncology.
Tangible support, far beyond words
In the world of sports, there is no shortage of charitable initiatives, but Messi’s stands out for its long-term commitment. From access to healthcare and education to programs developed with UNICEF, his commitment has translated into concrete actions that have improved the lives of thousands of children.
His story thus takes on special significance: the child who once could not afford the care he needed to grow up has become a man who helps ensure healthcare, education, and opportunities for countless other children around the world.
And perhaps that is his greatest distinction, far beyond Ballon d’Or awards, records, and trophies.
