Antarctic thaw: A commercial gold mine soon within reach

  • Jul 09, 2026 08:35

Antarctica hides a treasure trove of strategic metals (gold, copper, iron, platinum) that are essential to our technologies. As a result of global warming, the Earth’s crust is slowly rising, freed from the weight of the glaciers. Scientists call this phenomenon “postglacial rebound.”

And suddenly, the continent is undergoing a transformation.

According to a study by Erica Lucas (University of California, Santa Cruz) published in the journal Nature Climate Change, without a drastic reduction in our emissions, 120,000 square kilometers of land (the size of North Korea) could emerge by 2300.

“As more and more ice-free land emerges in Antarctica, countries may become more interested in its potential for mineral resources,” Erica Lucas told Live Science.

A sanctuary on life support

Currently protected by the Antarctic Treaty (1959) and the Madrid Protocol (1991), the continent strictly prohibits mining. However, this ban could be revised as early as 2048. Faced with a shortage of essential metals, the temptation will be immense, particularly in regions rich in mineral deposits claimed by Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom. As this natural treasure trove nestled in the middle of the ice sheet is laid bare and the ban is lifted, a war over resources could break out.

However, extracting gold or copper at the South Pole remains an extreme logistical challenge. According to Tim Stephens, a professor of international law at the University of Sydney, these climatic barriers could paradoxically play a saving role:“The continent will remain a very challenging environment for the extraction of mineral resources,” he explains, suggesting that this environmental wake-up call will spur greater efforts to protect the site.

Will we plunder one of the planet’s last sanctuaries, or will we be able to preserve these natural resources? Despite the prevailing pessimism, we can hope that humanity, once this wave of populism has passed and before 2048, will demonstrate wisdom.
