Saving Money: When 18- to 24-year-olds cut back on digital subscriptions

No more digital subscriptions for some young French people who, according to a survey, are facing too many monthly expenses.

To cope with monthly expenses ranging from 59 to 64 euros (compared to a national average of 54 euros, according to 20 Minutes), many young people between the ages of 18 and 24 are choosing to cut back on their digital subscriptions, including music, gaming, news, and streaming.

The Ipsos/Sharesub study from October 2025, titled “The French and Subscription Management,” reveals that 70% of the 1,000 respondents have already canceled or considered canceling a subscription to keep their budget afloat.

To stay in control, these young people monitor their spending very closely: 26% of them check their subscriptions every month or every two to three months, thereby preventing the accumulation of forgotten subscriptions. This is a mishap that 29% of participants have already experienced, as platforms all too often remain opportunistically silent.

Not big fans of illegal activities

Faced with unnecessary subscriptions and financial constraints, 41% of users say they’re turning to an “intermittent” plan. They’re opting for a subscription tailored to their current needs.

Piracy, meanwhile, remains marginal (5 to 15% of users), with the 18–24 age group preferring legal subscription-sharing platforms. The risk? That the primary account holder might cancel the account.
