Soaring beach prices: Liguria offers umbrellas and deck chairs for 5 euros a day

Chiavari defies soaring beach prices: umbrellas, deck chairs, and folding chairs for just 5 euros a day on the public beaches of Marina Giulia and Velieri through September 13.

The municipality of Chiavari (located in the metropolitan city of Genoa) is attempting to curb soaring beach prices with an experimental public rental program featuring price caps. Through September 13, every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., visitors can rent beach umbrellas, deck chairs, and folding chairs on the beaches of Marina Giulia and Velieri for 5 euros (per item, for the entire day).

320 items at a flat rate

The service, managed by Marina Chiavari Srl, offers a total of 320 items of equipment, broken down as follows: 120 beach umbrellas, 150 lounge chairs, and 50 folding chairs. This flat rate applies to every type of equipment and is available to both residents and tourists.

How rentals work

The system is fully automated. To rent equipment, simply make the payment—in cash or by card—at the self-service kiosks located along the promenade and present the receipt to the staff on duty to pick up the equipment. The rental does not include transportation, setup, or placement on the beach; these remain the responsibility of the user.

A message from the Mayor

Here are the statements from Mayor Federico Messuti, posted on his Instagram account:

“An excellent start for the brand-new municipal rental service on the beaches of Marina Giulia and Velieri! From the early hours this morning, many residents and tourists chose to rent beach umbrellas, lounge chairs, and director’s chairs, confirming the success of this new municipal initiative. A service designed to make our coastline even more welcoming, functional, and accessible to everyone.”
