China has taken a tougher stance against the United States by imposing export controls on ten U.S. companies, in a new episode of escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington. The measure targets companies active in the defense, aerospace, and rare earth sectors and is part of a response to the United States’ expansion of its own blacklist of Chinese companies suspected of having ties to the military.
Beyond being a political gesture, the impact is very real for the companies involved. Chinese exporters are no longer permitted to supply them with dual-use goods—that is, products that can be used for both civilian and military purposes—and Beijing has also announced restrictions affecting an additional 46 U.S. companies regarding government procurement.
Beyond the political signal, the move illustrates a hardening of the Sino-American standoff over sensitive sectors, with direct consequences for defense, dual-use technologies, and supply chains for critical materials.
Beijing is targeting not only the military sector but also players in the rare earths industry, which directly affects strategic supply chains. The stakes therefore go beyond diplomatic symbolism: this represents a new lever of pressure on sectors critical to U.S. industry.
This series of events illustrates an intensification of the Sino-American standoff over strategic sectors, sensitive technologies, and critical supply chains, despite recent efforts at dialogue between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. These measures come one month after U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing for talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping aimed at stabilizing relations.
